A great logo does more than just represent a business, product or service. It evokes an emotional response (think of Disney). It creates desire (think Haagen-Dazs). The very best logos help to forge a sense of community among those who love the brand (think Harley Davidson, Apple, Nike)
Your logo is just one part of your corporate brand or identity, but it is arguably one of the most important parts, no matter how large or small your business is. It reflects the culture, purpose and goals of your business, as well as those of your customers and clients. Ultimately your logo acts as a visual symbol which helps reflect the values and qualities of your business and your products or services.
The best logos share three important qualities
Firstly, they communicate an idea, a description, a principle or feeling. Customers recognise the logo as a symbol of everything a brand represents. How well does this work? Think of the leading supermarkets and the distinctive ways in which they brand themselves. Can you picture their logos and colour schemes? Which is lime green and white? Yellow and black? Orange and yellow? Red and Blue?
Or think of mobile phone companies, airlines or brands of beer. All rely on strong, distinctive branding.
Secondly, they are practical. They work in different sizes, in colour or black and white, in adverts, in-store displays, billboards and posters, etc.
Lastly, all good logos share something else - they have aesthetic qualities. Some play on a name or word, or they present incongruous elements in an interesting way. Others are simpler representations of an idea or wood. However, all catch the eye and attention of the viewer in a unique way.
