Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is the method of improving a site's search engine rankings by designing and coding the site to increase its relevance to specific keywords used in searches through Google, Ask, Bing, Yahoo and so on.
Search engines now provide more business referrals than Yellow Pages. Any business with a website no longer needs to spend thousands on advertising in directories and magazines, for it has the potential to get found by customers online. The way to do this effectively is through search engine optimisation (SEO), sometimes called Search Engine Marketing (SEM).
Search engines such as Google pride themselves on the accuracy and relevancy of the results they deliver. To do this, Google scans every website every few weeks and rates each one depending chiefly on its content, accuracy and trustworthiness. There are several measures used, for instance,
- Does the site content match its description?
- Are there any links to it from other trusted sites
- Is it updated regularly?
- Is the site properly indexed and organised?
The last point above is the most technical and the most important. It includes the use and relevance of keywords in the site which the search engines detect. These are words and phrases relevant to the content of the site which are used in articles on the pages. These are listed in a hidden index of keywords in each page called metatags. If a page is about a particular subject which is backed up by the metatags, Google etc will rate the page and correspondingly the site, more highly.
Even if your website hasn't been optimised, it is already being rated by Google on certain keywords in your on-page text, headers, page titles, inbound links and other factors. However, this is more likely to be giving you good search results when looking for your business name, rather than finding you when searching for what you do in your location (e.g. hairdressers in Chester). This is fine for customers who already know you and search for your business name, but not for potential customers who do not know you.
